I. Morphology
Pannus lucrans asks nineteen dollars and offers, in exchange, a square of soft microfiber, 160 millimetres to a side, issued in a single colour Apple is content to call light gray. Into one face the maker has pressed its insignia: present but withdrawn, legible in a raking light and gone in a flat one, after the fashion of a raccoon’s eyeshine, which announces the animal in one angle of the lantern and conceals it in the next. There is no fastening. There is no case. There is no mechanism of any kind. The naturalist has examined the specimen from every angle available to him and can confirm, with the full weight of his office, that it is a cloth. He dwells on this longer than dignity allows because the specimen will shortly ask him to take it seriously, and he wishes the record to show that he began from the facts. The weave is fine and tight and uniform; the surface is soft in the particular manner of expensive things, which is to say not greatly softer than a cloth costing a fifth as much, but softer in a way the hand is induced to notice and, having noticed, to remember. This is the whole of its morphology. The naturalist has described beetles at greater length, and they had legs.
II. Behavior
Pannus lucrans wipes surfaces. This is the complete behavioural record, and the naturalist will not pad it.

And yet the naturalist must, against his expectation, enter a word in the creature’s defence — a thing he does rarely and never without checking first that no one is watching.The matter turns on nano-texture glass: a surface etched at the microscopic scale to scatter glare without a reflective coat, fitted to the maker’s costlier displays and a few of its tablets and portables. This etching is delicate, and the ordinary cleaning cloth, including many a respectable microfiber rival, will abrade it over time. For these surfaces Pannus lucrans is not a luxury but the recommended instrument, and the maker has endorsed no adequate substitute.
Here, and only here, the cloth is obligate. The creature that elsewhere merely cleans becomes, on this one terrain, the only animal permitted to enter. For every other surface in the kingdom it cleans excellently and unremarkably. It cleans. The naturalist notes, because someone must, that other things also clean.

The missing pouch is the one defensible grievance. A cloth with no home becomes a cloth that lives wherever it was last set down… the table, the breast pocket, the family hound’s mouth. The specimen costing nineteen dollars does not include the means of remaining, between deployments, a thing one can find. There is a certain justice in this. A creature that asks to be taken seriously, and then will not stay where it is put, is telling the truth about itself in at least one respect.
IV. Commercial Record
P. lucrans appeared on the maker’s website in October of 2021, set among the accessories beside a considerable refresh of hardware. It was not the announced creature. It was priced at nineteen dollars, and it was noticed in a degree wholly out of proportion to a tech handkerchief. Chroniclers suspended their coverage of the hardware to confirm the figure. The public produced, over a cloth, a volume of remark that a talking reptile at the World’s Fair would’ve envied. The specimen was pronounced, in the same hour, a cynical extraction of money and a considered instrument for a genuine professional need.
Within days it was on backorder, delivery stretched to twelve weeks, while the secondary market bid it to forty dollars and climbing. For a cloth! A single gray cloth with a pressed-in logo, fought over by grown adults refreshing a page at three in the morning like pigeons closing on a dropped crust. The naturalist wishes to be clear that he is describing a cloth. He records the episode only so that later naturalists will believe him.
A firm whose vocation is the forensic disassembly of the maker’s products subjected the specimen to a teardown. There is no dignified way to take a cloth apart, and the naturalist extends his sympathies to the technicians, who tried regardless. They found microfiber. They found stitching. They found a pressed-in logo and no unexpected organs whatever. The specimen was awarded a repairability score of zero, there being nothing within it to repair: the only specimen in the Archive to achieve this distinction honestly, by containing nothing, and not by the usual method of sealing its failures behind glue.On learning of the repairability score, Mussy is reported to have remarked that he "could have got into it, given the proper tools." This confidence is a hallmark of my contemporary, who has never yet met a sealed thing he did not believe he could open by force of temperament alone.

VI. Field Notes
The naturalist has not acquired P. lucrans. Possessing no nano-texture display, he has no professional warrant to, and a folded corner of a soft cotton shirt discharges the same office on ordinary glass, a fact the maker, to its credit, has never troubled to dispute. What merits the Archive’s attention was never the cloth. It was what the cloth disclosed. P. lucrans arrived at the precise hour when the maker’s pricing had become a subject in its own right: after the monitor stand sold for the price of a monitor, after the wheels sold for the price of a small holiday, when the watching world had begun to treat the cost of the maker’s accessories as a genre, with conventions and a devoted audience. The cloth did not begin this conversation. It walked into one already in progress, priced at nineteen dollars, and was handed a part no cleaning article had ever before been asked to play. And then it sold out, and remained sold out forweeks, which is the part the wits forget to mention when they have finished being amused. The naturalist records the episode without verdict. The market spoke, the cloth was bought and the screens were cleaned. What the exchange meant to either party remains, as with so much of Appleidae, a matter for the interpreter. The naturalist keeps the cloth he does own folded in a drawer. He has never paid to be told he needs a better one.
