I. Morphology
Virgula argenteum recasts Virgula album in metal. That is the entire review: same 88.9 millimetres, same six buttons, same infrared crown, a central select button finally formalised where the original had left the matter ambiguous. This is not a redesign. It is a refinement: the harder and rarer of the two disciplines.
The material change is the whole of the news. Where its ancestor wore warm white polycarbonate, this specimen wears cool brushed aluminium, arriving in 2009 the same year Apple’s laptops finished their own transition to the same material, a coordinated organism dressed to match hosts it did not choose the wardrobe for.
II. Behaviour
Identical to its predecessor in every observable respect: infrared emission, six-button command, the same pairing ritual. The naturalist who has operated the white wand may pick up the silver one with no adjustment whatsoever, because none was required. When a form already works, the task of a successor is not to complicate it but to perfect it, and metal here reads as a statement that the object was worth making properly the second time as well.

This is the last Virgula to operate in total silence, issuing commands with no capacity to receive them. Its successor would learn to talk back. On balance, the naturalist is not certain that was an improvement.

This specimen marks the end of one morphological era and the last stable expression of the original Virgula form. What follows it bears so little resemblance to the white and silver wands that it might be mistaken for a separate lineage, were the genus not stubbornly continuous.
V. Convergent Evolution & Issued With
The television remote had become, by 2009, a deeply overcrowded form, every competing manufacturer adding buttons until the object resembled a keyboard that had forgotten its purpose.

Virgula argenteum persisted in its refusal to join that accumulation: six buttons, one coin cell, ten metres of reach, and the confidence required to ship exactly that into a market demanding more.

VI. Field Notes
This exact specimen was submitted to the Society for reclassification as cutlery by Dr. Erasmus Gull, F.Z.S. Anything this cool to the touch and this precisely weighted, he argued, "belongs on a table setting, not a sofa cushion."The Society declined the motion, citing his prior success reclassifying the iSight as a camera on reasoning no less literal. A pattern, though never remarked upon to Gull's face twice in one sitting. The specimen has never once been used to cut anything, being aluminium, hollow, and entirely unsuited to the task Gull proposed for it.
There is a particular pleasure in picking this object up that is difficult to explain to anyone raised on later remotes: it is cool, weightless, and findable by feel in under two seconds, with a click on the directional ring that leaves no room for doubt. It did not invent this form. It perfected it, and outlasted two generations of Apple TV before being retired in 2015 for something more capable and, by most honest accounts, less loved. Progress often feels like loss until enough time has passed to see what was actually gained.
