I. Morphology
Sonophorus domesticus minimis fits a nightstand without asking the nightstand’s permission first: a compact oblate cylinder, 84 millimetres tall, wrapped in the same acoustic mesh as its larger relative and scaled down to suit. The apex carries a touch-sensitive region and, cut permanently into the surface, plus and minus volume marks: a small concession to legibility its full-size ancestor never bothered making, whose own controls surfaced only when touched, as though deciding moment to moment whether they wished to be seen at all.
II. Behavior
The specimen speaks entirely through a ring of light at its crown, colour and motion standing in for a face it does not otherwise have, genuinely reminiscent of the chromatophoric flush of a cephalopod deciding how it feels about the moment.

More remarkable than any of this is what the naturalist did not expect to find inside so small a body: a temperature sensor and a humidity sensor, turned outward at the room rather than inward at the user, feeding directly into HomeKit automations the specimen never announces and rarely gets credit for. Most Appleidae instruments measure the wearer, heart rate, blood oxygen, the Watch’s own barometric altimeter inferring altitude from a hike. This one measures the weather in your kitchen and volunteers nothing about it. The achievement is granted without the usual hedging. Sonophorus domesticus magnus, the 2023 full-size successor, inherited both sensors intact: the clearest evidence available that the trait earned its keep.

The shed display tells its own story: the ancestral line is thick with screen-bearing relatives, and this species gave the structure up entirely in exchange for nineteen LEDs and a narrower, sharper purpose. A constrained niche, deliberately chosen.

The record is brief but instructive. First observed in 2020, the specimen has remained externally unchanged since, its internals borrowed wholesale from a wearable that never once touched a nightstand.
V. Lineage, Convergent Evolution & Prerequisites
Preceded by Sonophorus domesticus primus (2018–2021), the full-size ancestor this specimen’s compact branch quietly outlived; succeeded by nothing yet, the line remaining extant and, as of Sonophorus domesticus magnus (2023), restored to full size alongside it.
The compact smart-speaker niche was not this specimen’s to discover. Amazon’s Echo had staked it out six years earlier, Google’s Home two years before, and Amazon’s own Echo Dot had already proven the miniaturised form viable well ahead of this arrival.

Multiple genera converged on near-identical dimensions, roughly 100mm across, fabric integument, upward-firing audio, suggesting the environment had by then finished selecting for shape; differentiation moved to the ecosystem level and stayed there. Unlike its ancestor, this specimen arrived on schedule: broadband was universal, voice recognition had cleared its threshold, HomeKit and Matter were forming, AirPlay 2 already shipped, and component costs had fallen far enough to make the whole exercise affordable. Every prerequisite was in place at emergence, which this naturalist suspects is the real reason it succeeded where its larger ancestor stumbled.
VI. Field Notes
Dr. Erasmus Gull, F.Z.S., once submitted a photograph of the light ring, mid-listening animation, to a marine biology quarterly, captioned as a newly observed bioluminescent cephalopod encountered "off a shelf in Kensington."The quarterly's editors were kind enough to ask only one clarifying question before declining it, a restraint this naturalist has never managed to extend to Gull himself. The resemblance is real. The zoology was not.
Three specimens of this kind live in the naturalist’s own household, in the laundry, the kitchen, and a child’s room, and have been thoroughly forgotten in the specific way a well-adapted domestic organism earns by disappearing into the furniture of daily life. The intercom function still sees regular use at mealtimes, when a task requires attending to and shouting up a staircase remains, somehow, the fastest available protocol. The light ring still catches the eye now and again, the soft pulse of listening, the spinning arc of thought, engineering effort spent on a flourish nobody requested and the device did not strictly need. It measures the weather in that room, too, and has never once mentioned it.
