I. Morphology

Oculus ocularis is a cylinder. This is its most important fact. At a moment when every competing specimen in the webcam niche was a plastic bulge on a stalk (asymmetrical, utilitarian, apologetic in its design) Apple produced an aluminium tube: thirty-four millimetres in diameter, eighty-eight in length, capped at one end with a three-element lens and on its ventral surface a single FireWire port, by which the creature drew both its sustenance and its instruction. It was, in the strictest sense, incapable of independent life. The port was an umbilicus; the machine to which it ran was the mother, and the specimen never in its existence learned to be anything but tethered.

The lens end is the specimen’s face. A circular aperture, recessed slightly into the aluminium body, houses the F/2.8 lens assembly. Around it, the body steps outward slightly, a subtle shoulder that gives the front face a sense of depth and framing. The lens does not project. It observes from within.

Privacy is not an accessory here but an anatomy: the front barrel rotates, and in rotating it draws a mechanical iris shut across the aperture, sealing the eye behind its own body. There is nothing to misplace and nothing to attach; the closing is a movement the creature performs upon itself. Dr. Erasmus Gull, F.Z.S., shown the twisting privacy iris, pronounced it "surely a fault in the assembly, for a lens ought to remain open," and spent an afternoon attempting to wedge it permanently ajar. This from a man who has never kept his own eyes open through a full meeting of the Society: I have watched them close during the treasurer's report, during his own paper, and during a fire. A lens, it seems, is held to a standard its owner is not. In the shut position the lens is blind and the microphone falls silent together, by the one gesture. Its presence suggests that Apple anticipated, in 2003, that you might not always wish to be seen, and built the reluctance into the animal instead of bolting it on after.


II. Behavior

The specimen’s purpose was singular and it made no attempt to conceal this. Oculus ocularis existed to transmit the face of one person to another person in real time. There was no memory card slot, no local output, no viewfinder: the specimen could not look upon what it saw. The image it captured was never meant for the creature or its keeper; it was addressed, from the instant of capture, to someone elsewhere. This is an animal that exists only to be witnessed at a distance, and knows nothing of its own gaze. Such an eye is useless without a correspondent, and so one was provided: iChat AV was released alongside it, the software grown to receive what the hardware could only send.

This is what separates Oculus ocularis from every member of Class Capturia. A camera in Capturia makes something. A camera in Transmissoria sends something. The iSight sent.

The autofocus was the marvel. In 2003, the category norm was fixed focus: a lens aimed at a point approximately arm’s length away and left there. The iSight’s two-element assembly tracked the subject continuously. If you leaned forward to read something on your screen, it followed you. If you stood to reach a shelf, it adjusted. This was, in the webcam market of 2003, extraordinary.


III. The Question of Over-Engineering

Macworld’s retrospective on the specimen, published years after its discontinuation, described it as “emblematic of a certain kind of product we occasionally get from Apple, something that has had entirely disproportionate amounts of love lavished on it, producing something that is not only beautiful but which feels, however wrong this may actually be, like it’s unnecessarily good.”

The description is accurate and insufficient. The iSight was not merely over-engineered in the sense of possessing specifications beyond what the task required. It was over-engineered in the more interesting sense of having been taken seriously by people who did not need to take it seriously; people who could have shipped a plastic blob, captured the same 640 × 480 frames, and called it done. They did not do that.

The aluminium body cost more to produce than plastic. The two-element autofocus lens in a device whose resolution was VGA was, on any rational analysis, surplus to requirements. None of this was accidental. The specimen is what it is because someone at Apple decided that a webcam was worth doing properly, even if the world wasn’t quite ready to use it properly.


IV. Arrival Context

Oculus ocularis was introduced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 23, 2003. It arrived alongside iChat AV (Apple’s video conferencing application, itself a new addition to the operating system) in a deliberate pairing: the software required something to look through, and Apple intended to supply it.

The specimen was presented to every developer attending WWDC that year as a gift. This is a notable detail. At a moment when video calling was a novelty (broadband was spreading but not yet assumed, and the average user’s video call experience was a pixelated, stuttering ordeal conducted through a $30 plastic camera) Apple handed the software developers of its ecosystem an aluminium cylinder with an autofocus lens and said: this is what it should look like.

The retail price was $149 USD. This was not the price of a webcam. It was, in 2003, the price of a considered piece of equipment. The market bought it anyway.


V. Discontinuation

O. ocularis was discontinued in December 2006, three years and six months after its introduction. By late 2006, the iMac and MacBook Pro had both acquired built-in cameras, also marketed under the iSight name, though bearing no physical resemblance to this specimen. The external camera market that Oculus ocularis had briefly elevated retreated back to plastic. The category it had described (a premium, beautifully made external webcam for the desk) was not seriously revisited by any manufacturer for over a decade.

The specimen was not a commercial failure. It was simply discontinued at a point when the integrated camera had made the external one unnecessary for most users, and the regulatory path to continuation was not taken. It left quietly, by paperwork rather than by defeat.


VI. Field Notes

O. ocularis is, among the specimens so far catalogued, the one that most directly confronts the question of what this archive is for. It is not a remarkable device by the standards of what followed. Its resolution was outpaced within years. Its FireWire connection became a minority interface and then effectively extinct. The video calling it enabled became so ordinary that we stopped noticing we were doing it.

What it was, in 2003, was a proof of concept that nobody had asked for: that a webcam could be made with the same care as a piece of furniture, and that it would be better for it. Not better in a way that mattered to the specification sheet. Better in a way that mattered to the person sitting in front of it, who was about to have a conversation with someone far away and deserved a beautiful object to look through while doing so.

The naturalist keeps one on a shelf. Forever watching but never seeing.
