I. Morphology
Oculiphon retinae abandons two years of polycarbonate for a sandwich of Gorilla Glass front and back around a precision steel band, the thinnest specimen in the world at emergence and, the naturalist will grant without qualification, the most beautiful the genus ever produced. Narrower and flatter than its predecessors, it asserts itself in the hand where earlier specimens merely sat there; the edges are flat, the glass back catches light, and the whole object reads as designed, not evolved.
The display runs at 326 pixels per inch, a density Apple named RetinaOn the claim that at normal reading distance the human retina cannot resolve individual pixels at this density. Approximately true for most observers, and true in a second sense this naturalist doubts was planned: this is the *retinae* specimen, and retina is an anatomical term besides. The pun is unplanned and welcome regardless. the human eye being unable to resolve further at normal reading distance. Observers who handled early units reported the sensation of looking through the glass and not at it.
II. Behavior
Two capacities arrive for the first time in the lineage: a forward-facing camera enabling FaceTime, restricted to WiFi at launch by carrier negotiation rather than any anatomical limit, and a three-axis gyroscope granting the organism full awareness of its own orientation in space, added atop the existing compass and accelerometer.

Both new senses run without the thermal hesitation earlier specimens showed when asked to do too much at once, a credit to the silicon underneath, not to any single visible feature.
III. The Antenna Incident
The steel band ringing the specimen’s edge is not trim. It is the antenna itself, cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS unified into one continuous structure, segmented by thin plastic breaks at specific points around the frame. What follows undid a season of genuine engineering pride: bridging the gap between the lower-left segments, precisely where a left hand rests during an ordinary call, caused measurable signal attenuation. Reception dropped. Calls dropped. Every reviewer found it within days of the 24 June launch.
The specimen’s own architect, informed of the defect by a customer, replied in writing that he should simply avoid holding it that way, a sentence that has outlived the phone, the defect, and very nearly the company’s patience for having it repeated back at them. It entered the language; any device that fails under ordinary handling is still, today, liable to receive some variant of it in response.
Consumer Reports tested the phenomenon, confirmed it, and declined to recommend the device, a rare enough event for this family that the naturalist records it as its own kind of milestone. Apple held a press conference three weeks later and arrived with evidence that several competing handsets exhibited similar attenuation under similar handling. The argument was accurate. It did not help. None of those other phones had put the antenna on the outside, launched to that much fanfare, or had their own designer suggest the fault lay with the hand.
The resolution was a free rubber Bumper, covering the very edge Apple had spent a keynote admiring, and the whole episode acquired its own name, Antennagate, which has outlived the device by a considerable margin. The drop was never once triggered by Dr. Erasmus Gull, F.Z.S., who attributes this to "a lifetime’s practice holding a telephone the way a man holds a grudge, by the extreme edges, at arm’s length, and never warmly."This naturalist can independently confirm the grip. He has watched Gull hold considerably smaller objects at exactly this distance, including, on one occasion, an outstretched hand offered in truce. It is, unusually for Gull, an accurate piece of self-description.

V. Field Notes
O. retinae was leaked before its own announcement: a prototype misplaced at a bar in Redwood City that spring was found, identified, and published by a technology blog, and Apple’s response (legal notices, a police search of the journalist’s home) was disproportionate enough to make the organism famous before it had officially existed. The specimen that finally reached stores on 24 June 2010 was already known to everyone who cared to know, which changed nothing about the length of the queue.
It remains, in the consensus of the field, the most beautiful Oculiphon built: a device that felt composed rather than accumulated. The glass back that made it fragile also made it a different category of object, and owners reported a reluctance to case it sitting alongside a low-grade anxiety about dropping it, two feelings that coexisted for the entire span of ownership without ever quite resolving. It is also the one whose name, in certain company, still prompts a joke about how you are and are not permitted to hold it.
