I. Morphology

Oculiphon jobsii ran a display modest by every standard that came after it and dazzling by every standard that came before. The body is a rectangular slab of glass, aluminium, and stainless steel, its face given over almost entirely to that 3.5-inch pane. The anterior is Gorilla Glass, the posterior brushed aluminium, the lateral band polished steel: a material combination that communicates durability without ever raising its voice about it.

There is one button below the screen and almost nothing else: a sleep toggle, a silent switch, a volume rocker, and a headphone port recessed so deeply that the standard plug of the era could not reach it without an adapter, an anatomical eccentricity the naturalist records without fully forgiving. The specimen asks the eye to notice how little it needed to add.

II. Behavior

The specimen’s defining trait is a gesture system: tap, pinch, swipe, and flick, interpreted with enough accuracy to retire the physical keyboard outright, a proposition the whole industry had, until that January, considered settled in the keyboard’s favour.

At the announcement, Steve Jobs asked the room, rhetorically, who wanted a stylus, and answered his own question before anyone could. On hearing the remark secondhand, Dr. Erasmus Gull, F.Z.S., pronounced its authors “men who have never held a pen,” and was subsequently observed, some months later, attempting to operate his own unit’s touchscreen with an actual quill, for the sake of "consistency."The quill did not register on the capacitive surface. Gull attributed this failure to the device and not to the quill, a diagnosis consistent with a great many of his other diagnoses. The specimen required nothing but the hand it was built for.

The absent list is more instructive than embarrassing. The environment in January 2007 did not yet know what a smartphone needed to be. This specimen arrived before the niche existed and the niche assembled itself around it afterward, which is a rarer trick than any feature on the list.

Fourteen months is a short reign for a founding species, but the environment it created was evolving faster than any single specimen could keep pace with. The ecosystem this one seeded had already outgrown it by the time it left the shelf.

V. Lineage & Convergent Evolution

Oculiphon jobsii has no direct ancestor within Appleidae; the nearest prior specimens are the iPod lineage and the Newton, and neither is a true antecedent in form or behaviour. It was not, however, alone in its moment. Several genera were working the identical problem in 2007, under the identical pressure: a pocket device for calls, music, and internet access, operated without physical keys.

Every one of these genera felt the same selective forces. Only one arrived at a form that redefined the environment instead of merely occupying it, and the distinction is not owed to any single anatomical feature so much as to their combination, arriving together, in the same object, at the same hour.

VI. Field Notes

The original iPhone was announced on 9 January 2007 to a room of journalists who did not fully understand what they were looking at, and early naturalist accounts of the event describe, with a straight face, three separate species in attendance that January: Telephonium mirabile, the wonderful telephone; Interpres reticulatus, the networked communicator; and Podicus amplus, the ample iPod. All three turned out, on further study, to be partial sightings of the same animal, and Steve Jobs closed the matter from the stage before the taxonomists could properly argue about it.

The device went on sale 29 June 2007 to queues that became news in their own right, news reporting on news reporting on the queue, a phenomenon the naturalist has observed only a handful of times since and never quite so purely. What the specimen chose not to do (no 3G, no GPS worth the name, no copy and paste, no applications) mattered less than what it did instead, which was make every element of the interface feel considered rather than merely assembled. You felt this within seconds of picking it up, before you could have explained why.

Oculiphon jobsii is extinct. Its lineage is now one of the most abundant on the planet, giving Genghis Khan a run for his money, a comparison the naturalist offers without further comment because none is required.
